County Team Selection

With DWAA coming back from a few difficult years, and the pandemic interrupting shooting and competitions, we would like to know who is out there within the County and interested in shooting for the county team.  We are looking at putting together a team for the GWAS Inter-Counties which will be held in September at Exmouth.    If you are interested in selection, please arrange to submit 3 scores shot in a competition during 2022.  The selection process this year will look at the classification from the scores received and will select accordingly.

Below are 2 links, the first is DWAA – Expression of Interest.  So we can get a feel for how many archers in the County are back to competition level, please fill out this survey if you are interested in shooting for the County this year.

The second one is DWAA – Submission of Scores.  Use this to submit your 3 scores and to be considered for the County team.

If you have any questions or queries, please email Vicky, team manager: missvickyburden@gmail.com

Sell My Bow

To the Secretary,

We’d like to introduce you to a brand new way for your members to buy and sell their archery equipment, Sell My Bow is the first pre-loved marketplace exclusively for the sale of archery kit; an outlet which has been lacking in our sport for some time.
Archery is an inclusive and accessible sport that can be enjoyed by everyone, and like any other sport it can involve a large investment in kit.
This can be a daunting prospect both for current archers and those that are interested in taking up archery. The continual expense of upgrading and changing kit can become costly and limiting, so Sell My Bow was created to support all archers, whatever their discipline, in buying and selling their pre-owned archery equipment.

Archery has a supportive and sociable community with a thriving second-hand market – we know the value of the equipment we shoot with and appreciate its worth to others; imagine giving someone the chance to achieve new personal bests with the very same kit you did.
Sell My Bow is proud to increase the sustainability of our sport by rehoming unwanted archery items, so not only can new archers and buyers in the community access affordable kit, but sellers can recoup the money they’ve invested too.

In the past archers have had to rely on word of mouth, notices at their local club or posts on social media to buy and sell pre-owned archery kit; this is limiting and in the case of social media can sometimes attract unwanted and hurtful comments. Sell My Bow is a safe and secure platform without politics, personal opinion or trolling, our internal messaging system protects our members’ personal details so they don’t have to list their email address or phone number.

The pandemic has had a very damaging impact on our sport and as a result we have lost many active members. Sell My Bow is keen to promote archery as an accessible and affordable sport, by offering a dedicated archery marketplace to every discipline, ability and nationality. We hope that Sell My Bow will become every archers’ most favourite and trusted place to buy and sell their pre-owned archery equipment and that the benefits will be felt by your membership too.

Happy Shooting
From the Sell My Bow team

(Please find attached a poster of our details for clubs to print out and share with their members.)

DCAS AGM 2022

Over the last couple of years we have held all our Devon and Cornwall Archery Society Meetings on line. This year however we plan to hold one meeting in person and we would really like every club to be represented there.

Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Sunday 20 November at 2pm, at Yelverton Memorial Hall, it is open to all members.

At this meeting we elect the Devon and Cornwall Archery Committee for the next year. Some of the existing members of the committee have been in role for a long time and have expressed a wish to stand down or change role, so it would be really good to hear from anyone who would like to get more involved. Maybe you would like to see the County taking a more active role in some aspect of archery, maybe you feel the County Committee could do more, or you would like to see something done differently, this is your chance to get involved and see if you can make it happen.

I am sending this save the date message out deliberately early this year, and I hope you will;

SAVE THE DATE – 20 NOVEMBER 2PM – book it in your diary now and please come to the meeting.
Share this with your club members – there might be new people interested in being more involved in volunteering to lead the way the County support Archery Clubs and their members in the future.
If anyone is interested in any roles on the County committee and would like more information, get in touch. Let’s have a conversation now so that by the time we get to November any potential new committee members are ready to be nominated.
Finally a question, what would you like to see at the AGM? Is there someone you would like us to invite to speak at the meeting? Is there something we could organise that would make you more inclined to attend the meeting?

Best wishes
Karen Williams
Secretary Devon and Cornwall Archery Society

Dave Lawrence

It is with profound sadness that we share with you that Dave Lawrence from Canford Magna has passed away.

Some words below from the Secretary at Canford Magna Bowmen.

Dave was one of the founder members of Canford Magna Bowmen even before we were at our present home of Cobham’s, it is certainly no cliche to say that Dave’s input to the club over the years is incalculable. As our president and previously chairman, he has represented us at many levels and travelled miles to a lot of county and regional committees, as well as of course shooting events.

I don’t think there would be anybody in the club who hasn’t been directly or indirectly helped by Dave at some point. Whether that was being trained on a beginner course, with some tips on technique, spotting a bow that could do with a few tweaks, or in the background where he’d been sorting out the club kit, bosses and the like to keep the club running smoothly.

Dave’s input to the archery world in general is also massive, spanning back over 50 years. He was a member of the Royal Toxophilite Society, the ‘Royal Tox’, an invite-only club where, by their own description, invites are only extended to those that have “demonstrated a deep and/or long-standing commitment to archery”.

In 2015 both Dave and Caroline did a lot of work to recover funds after a fraud was committed. It is entirely possible that Canford Magna Bowmen might have folded at that point had they not stepped in.  This is one of the reasons cited for Dave’s nomination for an Honorary Life Membership with DWAA last year.
Dave will be missed dearly by the members of his club and beyond.  Our deepest condolences go out to Caroline.

If anyone would like to attend Dave’s funeral, this will be held on Monday 13th June 2022 at 12 noon in the Long Barrow hall at the Harbour View Crematorium, Randalls Hills, Lytchett Minster, Dorset BH16 6AN, all will be very welcome.

RIP Dave

Pete Spillar

It is with sadness that we share the news that Pete Spillar from Bowmen of Lychett has sadly passed away.

Pete was Chairman of the Bowmen of Lychett for over 20 years. He was also a coach, and helped with beginner courses and have a goes.

He particularly enjoyed the have a goes for the PHAB Club and always helped at the Mosaic residential weekend for bereaved families. He was also keen in helping the club on competition days.

If anyone would like to attend the funeral, this is being held at Harbour View Crematorium, Randalls Hill, Lychett Minster, on Thursday 9th June 2022 at 2.30pm.

John Nunn Obituary

It is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of John Nunn. John was one of our county judges for the last 11 years and had been a keen archer for many years before that. He was a much respected judge, much liked and respected by all archers, especially the juniors with whom he was very popular. He always had a kind word for all whilst at the same time carrying off his duties as a judge with efficiency and little fuss. He also much enjoyed his annual trips to Dunster. He will be much missed by his many friends and our sympathies go out to his wife Jill and his family.

Joan Griffiths

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Joan Griffiths from Supermarine Bowmen passed away on 5th April 2022 after a short illness.

Joan was an archer and coach but will be remembered for her many years of work as a judge for the DWAA county, Supermarine and many other shoots, including Dunster which she thoroughly enjoyed over the years.

She held the posts of Judges Liaison and Records Officer for the DWAA county committee and was the Chairman, Secretary and Tournament Organiser at Supermarine during her time there.

If anyone would like to attend the funeral, this is being held at Kingsdown Crematorium Swindon on Monday 25th April 2022 at 1.30pm, followed by a buffet at Supermarine Sports Club.
