Inter-Counties Exmouth

On Sunday members of the DWAA Senior County Team, took part in the inter-counties at Exmouth

Team Manager Vicky Burden said, “it went really well. We were obviously down some team members to begin with but we did very well to come 2nd in some of the categories. If we had a full team, we would’ve certainly given some counties a run for there money!”

Full results can be found on Ianseo.

Thanks to all those that took part, great team effort!

The county is in urgent need of two volunteers for the GWAS Intercounties on the Sunday 18th September held at Exmouth Archers Grounds.
As part of our counties team submission into the Intercounties, we are required provide at least two people to join the other counties and host club to make up the field crew. They will need to be able to move targets, line them up, reface at lunchtime as well as general field crew duties like looking for arrows. If you are, or know of anyone who would be able, to help with this please contact our team manager Andrew Hoyle at teammanager@dcas.org.uk.
As a member of the support team for DCAS, like the team members, you will get a bacon roll first thing, tea and coffee supplied throughout the day, cake and a buffet tea at the end of the day. If DCAS do not provide field crew, we will not have the opportunity to retain the regional title.

GAS County H2H Training

The county hosted a H2H Round Robin practice on Saturday, August 6 at Cleve Archers. Thank you to all the archers who attended. Organising a practice like this is much more involved than the usual coaching session. A big thank you to Elaina Curran for Organising; the entire team at Cleve for setting up; Declan Ashworth for judging; Graham Williams for his support as coach; and a big thank you to Peter Sisson who organised the rota and who is always so generous in his guidance, time and support. Can’t thank Denise Bunce enough (!!) for all her effort in running the event as T.O. Hope the archers found it worthwhile and enjoyed the event. 🎯

Ginger Parker

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce that Albert ‘Ginger’ Parker has passed away following an extended period of illness.

Ginger, who was a long standing member of Black & Gold Archers, had been actively involved with the club, within the wider archery community, and with the CSSC & CACCSA as well as GAS for many years.

In addition to his coaching activities on club nights and during beginners’ courses, Ginger was frequently found helping out at club tournaments and was a very familiar face to many at Dunster.

Fly true friend – a straight arrow, always gold, but now also missed.

RIP Ginger.

Proposed Changes DCAS Postals

Simon Slade, the DCAS Winter Postals, Frostbites and Summer Postals Organiser has been asked by Club’s to include a Compound Only Division, in the same way that we have introduced one for Longbow. After Simon attended the last DCAS Committee meeting to discuss options has has been given the backing to introduce other Divisions if clubs are interested.

DCAS will now have the following possibilities

A Compound Only Senior Division.
A Recurve/Barebow Only Senior Division
We already run a Longbow Only Senior Division.
We already run a mixed where there can be only 1 Compound and any other combination or Recurve/Barebow/Longbow.
A Mixed Division specifically for a Single Compound, a Single Recurve/Barebow and a Single Longbow.
A Mixed Non-Compound which could be 1 or 2 of Recurve/Barebow/Longbow but not three as that would already be covered.

Juniors could stay the same or we could allow a Mixed Non-Compound Division as above so that Clubs without a Compound Archer would not be so affected.

Simon said: “I am not sure clubs have enough Archers to fill all of these Divisions, but it may be more would be interested if they were available. An email will be sent to Club Secretaries by the DCAS Secretary so hopefully this message will get to as many clubs as possible.
“Hopefully Clubs now have plenty of time to discuss this and I ask that they provide me with feedback on whether they would consider entering teams for the existing and new Divisions. If we get enough positive feedback then I will run the new Divisions that are required. It maybe we can try them and see how it goes.”

Simon hopes this can assist in getting more Archers to return to shooting again and provide a more even competition within the Divisions.

Gloucestershire JNOC Success

Another incredibly successful year for Gloucestershire’s juniors at the Junior National Outdoor Champs this past weekend. 20 archers competed, some for the first time at a national tournament. There were 4 national records claimed; 26 county records; 27 JMB* and MB* scores; 5 Championship trophies won, these were awarded to Grace Curran, Lily Partridge, Sam Bowden, Amber Snell and Erin Moyce. The highlight, arguably, was winning both county team trophies. The first was for Mixed Recurve and Barebow, awarded to Gloucestershire for the time in the trophy’s 67 year history! Winners on this team were Amber and Ava Snell, Carlos Amata and Sophie Leivers. We also won the trophy for County Mixed Compound Team, thanks to the impressive efforts of Louise Bassett, Ryan Faulkner, Lily Partridge! It was an exciting and eventful tournament and we congratulate all of our amazing junior archers who took part.

County Team Selection

With DWAA coming back from a few difficult years, and the pandemic interrupting shooting and competitions, we would like to know who is out there within the County and interested in shooting for the county team.  We are looking at putting together a team for the GWAS Inter-Counties which will be held in September at Exmouth.    If you are interested in selection, please arrange to submit 3 scores shot in a competition during 2022.  The selection process this year will look at the classification from the scores received and will select accordingly.

Below are 2 links, the first is DWAA – Expression of Interest.  So we can get a feel for how many archers in the County are back to competition level, please fill out this survey if you are interested in shooting for the County this year.

The second one is DWAA – Submission of Scores.  Use this to submit your 3 scores and to be considered for the County team.

If you have any questions or queries, please email Vicky, team manager: missvickyburden@gmail.com

Sell My Bow

To the Secretary,

We’d like to introduce you to a brand new way for your members to buy and sell their archery equipment, Sell My Bow is the first pre-loved marketplace exclusively for the sale of archery kit; an outlet which has been lacking in our sport for some time.
Archery is an inclusive and accessible sport that can be enjoyed by everyone, and like any other sport it can involve a large investment in kit.
This can be a daunting prospect both for current archers and those that are interested in taking up archery. The continual expense of upgrading and changing kit can become costly and limiting, so Sell My Bow was created to support all archers, whatever their discipline, in buying and selling their pre-owned archery equipment.

Archery has a supportive and sociable community with a thriving second-hand market – we know the value of the equipment we shoot with and appreciate its worth to others; imagine giving someone the chance to achieve new personal bests with the very same kit you did.
Sell My Bow is proud to increase the sustainability of our sport by rehoming unwanted archery items, so not only can new archers and buyers in the community access affordable kit, but sellers can recoup the money they’ve invested too.

In the past archers have had to rely on word of mouth, notices at their local club or posts on social media to buy and sell pre-owned archery kit; this is limiting and in the case of social media can sometimes attract unwanted and hurtful comments. Sell My Bow is a safe and secure platform without politics, personal opinion or trolling, our internal messaging system protects our members’ personal details so they don’t have to list their email address or phone number.

The pandemic has had a very damaging impact on our sport and as a result we have lost many active members. Sell My Bow is keen to promote archery as an accessible and affordable sport, by offering a dedicated archery marketplace to every discipline, ability and nationality. We hope that Sell My Bow will become every archers’ most favourite and trusted place to buy and sell their pre-owned archery equipment and that the benefits will be felt by your membership too.

Happy Shooting
From the Sell My Bow team

(Please find attached a poster of our details for clubs to print out and share with their members.)

DCAS AGM 2022

Over the last couple of years we have held all our Devon and Cornwall Archery Society Meetings on line. This year however we plan to hold one meeting in person and we would really like every club to be represented there.

Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Sunday 20 November at 2pm, at Yelverton Memorial Hall, it is open to all members.

At this meeting we elect the Devon and Cornwall Archery Committee for the next year. Some of the existing members of the committee have been in role for a long time and have expressed a wish to stand down or change role, so it would be really good to hear from anyone who would like to get more involved. Maybe you would like to see the County taking a more active role in some aspect of archery, maybe you feel the County Committee could do more, or you would like to see something done differently, this is your chance to get involved and see if you can make it happen.

I am sending this save the date message out deliberately early this year, and I hope you will;

SAVE THE DATE – 20 NOVEMBER 2PM – book it in your diary now and please come to the meeting.
Share this with your club members – there might be new people interested in being more involved in volunteering to lead the way the County support Archery Clubs and their members in the future.
If anyone is interested in any roles on the County committee and would like more information, get in touch. Let’s have a conversation now so that by the time we get to November any potential new committee members are ready to be nominated.
Finally a question, what would you like to see at the AGM? Is there someone you would like us to invite to speak at the meeting? Is there something we could organise that would make you more inclined to attend the meeting?

Best wishes
Karen Williams
Secretary Devon and Cornwall Archery Society
